Building a Strong Saddle for a Large Animal

Draft horses require a unique saddle to ensure comfort and stability. Their size and powerful build mean the saddle must be made with the right parts from the start. We build our draft saddles to fit the animal's large back and wide shoulders. The goal is a great fit that allows the horse to perform its work easily.


Every saddle starts with a strong wood tree covered in bullhide. The tree is built with draft size bars. These bars are critical for fitting the horse's shape correctly. We pay close attention to the bar's angle, rock, and twist. This ensures the saddle sits correctly and evenly spreads the rider's weight.



Rider comfort matters, too. We discuss your riding style, height, and weight to customize the seat. This includes setting the proper shape of the cantle and matching the fender length to your size. The stirrup leathers are set for maximum swing and ease of movement.

Always Made With The Highest Quality Materials

We use high-quality American-tanned leather that lasts for years of hard use. The leather is colored while it is tanned, so the color won't rub onto your clothes. The ground seat is hand-carved to fit the rider's body. The saddle skirts are fitted and shaped to the tree. This gives the draft horse a better fit and better performance.



We build each saddle with screws and nails, never staples. We use only thick, bark-tanned wool shearling for the skirts, avoiding synthetic materials. Your finished custom draft saddle will be properly oiled and ready to ride when it arrives.
